DCU Access to the Workplace Intern Success Story
DCU Access to the Workplace Intern Success Story
24/06/2025
Since 2019, McKeon Group has proudly supported Dublin City University’s Access to the Workplace (ATTW) programme, an award-winning initiative that provides professional, paid summer internships to DCU Access students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds and to neurodivergent students.
This programme is designed to address systemic barriers to employment by equipping students with meaningful work experience, professional networks, and the confidence to succeed in their chosen careers. Our involvement reflects a long-standing commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable workforce.
Over the past few years, McKeon Group has welcomed five exceptional interns through the ATTW programme. Each of these individuals has brought unique insights and energy to our organisation, and we’ve consistently been impressed by their professionalism, creativity, and drive.
Summer 2024: Madalina’s Experience of Working with McKeon Group
In 2024, we had the pleasure of welcoming Madalina Jelihovschi to our team as our summer intern. Throughout her placement, Madalina demonstrated a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and genuine enthusiasm.
Here’s what she had to say about her experience with us:
“During my two-month internship with McKeon Group last summer, I had an incredible experience that left a lasting impression on me. From day one, everyone at the company welcomed me with open arms. Although I was only there for a short period, it truly felt like I had been part of the team for much longer.
I had the opportunity to work in the HR department, where I learned a lot and gained hands-on experience. My manager, Derek McBrien, was a huge part of making my time there so valuable. Despite his busy schedule, he always made sure to check in on me regularly. He was incredibly patient, answering all my questions and providing thorough explanations. His support helped me feel confident in my work, even when I was tackling new and unfamiliar tasks.
During my internship, I learned a great deal about various HR processes. One of the key things I learned about was the RACI model, which helped me better understand the roles and responsibilities within a project. I also conducted research on learning styles, which gave me insight into how different people process and retain information—an important part of training and development. One of the highlights of my time at McKeon Group was helping organise their Music Festival. It was an amazing event that really brought employees together and created a fun, relaxed atmosphere.
Additionally, I gained experience in recruitment processes, such as reviewing CVs and learning about best practices in hiring. Every day brought something new to learn.
The work environment at McKeon Group made it easy to enjoy every day I was there. Everyone was so approachable and willing to help, which fostered a collaborative and encouraging atmosphere. I truly looked forward to coming in each day. My internship at McKeon Group not only gave me valuable insights into the world of HR but also helped me develop skills that I will carry forward into my future career.”
McKeon Group’s Commitment to Education
Our commitment to education and opportunity is deeply rooted in our history. Founded in 1950 by Tom McKeon and later led by his son Tomás Mac Eoin Snr (who, having previously worked as a teacher, valued education deeply), and now by his son Tomás Mac Eoin, our company has always believed in creating pathways for people to learn and succeed.
Supporting DCU’s Access to the Workplace programme is a natural extension of that ethos. We’re proud to play a role in shaping a better future, and we look forward to welcoming more talented students in the near future.
